Caring for Your Tufted Rug
Tufted rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn through the backing material using a tufting gun, rather than using knots. They are created by weaving loops of yarn through a monk’s cloth backing, producing a plush and decorative rug. Tufted rugs tend to shed more than other types, requiring more frequent vacuuming.
Fluffing: Tufted rugs may experience fluffing, a natural occurrence that diminishes over time with regular hand brushing and vacuuming.
Sprouting: Protruding tufts are common in tufted rugs. Instead of pulling them out, trim them with scissors to prevent damage.
Crushing: Heavy furniture can cause indents in the rug due to crushed piles. To prevent this, periodically rearrange your furniture and the rug. Regular rotation of the rug also helps distribute wear evenly.
Regular Cleaning: Brush or vacuum the rug regularly, ideally twice a week.
Immediate Spill Response: Remove spills immediately by blotting with an undyed cloth.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of harsh chemical cleaners for stain removal.
Keep Dry: Avoid using the rug in damp areas and do not soak it in water.
No Dry Cleaning: Dry cleaning is not recommended for tufted rugs.
Vacuuming: Vacuuming is an economical and effective way to maintain your rug. Use a suction vacuum without the beater bar, as it can twist or break tufted fibers. If your vacuum has adjustable suction, set it to a low level and run the vacuum over each area 3-5 times to remove dust, dirt, and hair.
Stain Removal: For dry stains, scrape and vacuum the area. For wet stains, use a paper towel or undyed cloth to absorb the stain. Dampen the area with lukewarm water and a cloth or sponge, then soak up the water with a cloth. Repeat until the stain fades. Avoid soaking the rug to preserve the glue binding holding the tufts.
Tackling Tough Stains: For greasy or stubborn stains, use a pH-neutral, bleach-free cleaner and follow the above steps.
